Columbus -
State Senator Kevin Bacon (R - Minerva Park) was joined by Ohio Attorney  General Mike DeWine today as he announced the introduction of a bill aiming to provide law  enforcement entities with the tools necessary to investigate and prosecute crimes of cyber fraud.

The two officeholders took part in a Statehouse press conference this morning and offered details  about the bill's particulars.

Under the legislation, the Attorney General would be given authority to investigate potential  criminal violations of telecommunications fraud and to issue subpoenas and compel witness  testimony in relation to such proceedings. Additional criminal penalties will also be created for  commission of fraud against elderly and disabled people in Ohio.

"Cyber fraud is a growing problem throughout the nation, not just in Ohio," Bacon said. "As this  type of criminal activity becomes more sophisticated, we need to become more aggressive. The  components of this bill will keep Ohioans safe from potential dangers."

Bacon's legislation also carries a provision allowing the Attorney General to draw upon the  Telemarketing Fraud Enforcement Fund in order to cover expenses related to the investigation or  prosecution of cyber fraud cases.

State Representative Ross McGregor (R - Springfield) who has introduced a similar bill in the  Ohio House of Representatives.
