Senator Kevin Bacon (R–Minerva Park) stood by Governor John Kasich as he signed the 2014 Capital Bill into law at the Reeb Avenue School, located in the Southern Gateway area of Columbus. Along with providing dollars for improvements to public facilities, the Capital Bill also serves as an important funding mechanism for community development and innovation.

Located in the 3rd Senate District, the Southern Gateway is an area where unemployment, poverty, infant mortality and illiteracy rates are among the highest in the city.

“The Southern Gateway community needs our support,” said Bacon. “To restore the neighborhood and help families residing there, we need to fully invest in innovative workforce programming and youth development.”

The Reeb Avenue School Renewal project received a $2 million allocation in the State Capital Bill. The state’s investment will allow the school to house several non-profit agencies and provide a community space for residents.

Once completed, the School will offer:

  • Workforce and training services provided by the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Organization (COWIC).
  • GED classes and other adult education programs provided by Goodman Guild.
  • Youth Development Programming provided by the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus.
  • Early learning instruction for infants and pre-K children provided by the South Side Learning and Development Center. They will also offer second shift care for working parents.
  • Community Development for All People will provide a hot lunch program and fresh food co-operative for residents in need.
  • Other organizations partnering with the Center include St. Stephen’s Community House, Ruling our Experiences (ROX), and City of Columbus Pride Center.
