Columbus -
Legislation that targets cyber fraud offenders cleared the Ohio Senate today.   Senate Bill 223, sponsored by State Senator Kevin Bacon (R - Minerva Park), will provide law  enforcement agencies with the tools necessary to investigate and prosecute crimes of cyber fraud.   The bill passed unanimously during today's Senate session.

The measure grants the Attorney General proper authority to investigate potential criminal  violations of telecommunications fraud.  It also allows the Attorney General to issue subpoenas  and compel witness testimony in relation to these criminal proceedings.  Offenders who commit  an act of cyber fraud against individuals that they know to be elderly or disabled will be subject  to additional penalties.

"As crime evolves due to modern technology, so must the tools used to prevent and punish it.  I  am confident this bill will keep our most vulnerable Ohioans safe from these predators." Bacon  said.

Additionally, Senate Bill 223 carries a provision allowing the Attorney General to use the  Telemarketing Fraud Enforcement Fund in order to cover expenses related to the investigation or  prosecution of cyber fraud cases.

Attorney General Mike DeWine has been a vocal supporter of the bill.
Senator Kevin Bacon represents Ohio's 3rd Senate District which contains part of Franklin County. He serves as Chairman of the Insurance, Commerce, and Labor Committee.
