STATEHOUSE -

Senator Bill Beagle (R–Tipp City) today introduced Senate Bill 39, which will create a penalty for failing to yield in a school zone crosswalk.

“After speaking with our local prosecutors, I learned there is not a law that specifically addresses pedestrians, including children, who are hit in a school zone. Very often, the choices prosecutors have are either too severe, or not severe enough,” said Beagle. “Our children’s safety is a top priority for me, and it is my hope this bill will work to both keep our children safe as they go to and from school, and force drivers to be more careful when driving in a school zone.”

The bill will create a third degree misdemeanor for striking a child within a school zone. Additionally, if a driver hits a child within a school zone while on a suspended license, the driver will receive an additional six month suspension.

Beagle also introduced Senate Bill 42, which will modernize mental health treatment for minors. The bill, “Dylan’s Voice,” named after a young man who committed suicide, will allow minors to seek out mental health treatment at age 11, and expand the amount of time they are allowed to speak with mental health professionals before requiring additional consent.

Both bills have been referred to Senate Committees for further deliberation.
