Columbus -
State Senator Bill Beagle (R- Tipp City) announced today that the Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 120, legislation that clarifies that county prosecutors may represent all taxpayer-funded public libraries. Beagle introduced Senate Bill 120 in response to a recent federal court ruling which cast doubt on the decades-long practice of county prosecutors representing public libraries in legal matters. Without this legislation, some taxpayer funded libraries would be required to hire private legal counsel. "I am pleased that my colleagues in the Senate have joined with me in rejecting this undue burden on public libraries and restoring the traditional relationship between public libraries and county prosecutors," Beagle said. "In these times of fiscal uncertainty, the last thing public libraries need is to be subjected to the costly legal fees that come with hiring private counsel." Senate Bill 120 - Beagle's first bill to pass the Senate - was approved by a unanimous vote. It now heads to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
Senator Bill Beagle serves the people of Ohio's 5th District, which includes Miami County and portions of Montgomery and Darke counties.
