STATEHOUSE -

The Ohio Senate today passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 22, sponsored by State Senator Bill Beagle (R–Tipp City), which urges the U.S. Congress to bring libraries, publishers and other interested parties together to find a cost-effective solution to providing increasingly popular eBooks.

Currently, public libraries are finding it difficult to access digital media due to its higher cost. Libraries sometimes pay up to 10 times the cost of digital materials from a publisher when compared to what an average reader would normally pay through other venues.

“Reading is an important part of learning, which is why we encourage our children to be lifelong readers from a young age,” said Beagle. “As the years go by, digital media is becoming the preferred method of consumption, specifically by younger readers, but our libraries are not always able to afford to provide this service. Regardless of economic status, our communities should have access to information and digital material.”

Senate Concurrent Resolution 22 will now move onto the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
