Columbus -
Legislation to eliminate the overlapping of public library taxing districts and give public libraries more tools to operate flexibly and efficiently in today's economic environment received unanimous approval this afternoon from the Ohio Senate. "It is a peculiar phenomenon that there are folks in Ohio paying taxes twice for library service," said bill sponsor State Senator Bill Beagle (R - Tipp City). "This legislation eliminates this issue and provides some much-needed relief to those unlucky Ohioans who find themselves in this situation." The bill will also provide public libraries with a new set of tools to help them meet the challenges of today's fiscal environment including allowing public libraries to carry unencumbered funds forward by a simple majority vote of the board, increasing the competetive bidding threshold for public libraries from $25,000 to $50,000, and allowing a County Budget Commission to eliminate the requirement that libraries in the County prepare a tax budget.
Senator Bill Beagle serves the people of Ohio's 5th Senate District, which includes Miami County and portions of Montgomery and Darke Counties.
