COLUMBUS– State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley) recently took part in a festive celebration honoring the achievements of Ohio's young Soap Box Derby champions from around the state.

LaRose joined the International Soap Box Derby and the Ohio Local Soap Box Derby Directors in organizing and hosting a Statehouse Recognition Day on Wednesday, which honored 104 Ohio champions from over 60 communities around the state. 

"I am thrilled to recognize the Soap Box Derby champions from my district," said Senator LaRose. "These young people have demonstrated tremendous skill, perseverance and creativity in constructing and racing their cars."

LaRose welcomed four champions from his district who attended the Statehouse Recognition Day:
  • Alex Bobick of Twinsburg, an Ohio Super Kids Champion who competed in the National Super Kids Classic Race held at the International Soap Box Derby's track in Akron, Ohio.
  • Maria Fahey of Akron, an Ohio Rally Super Stock Champion who competed at the 77th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.
  • Sarah Longfellow of Nortonan Ohio Rally Super Stock Champion who competed at the 77th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.
  • Christian Viering of Fairlawn, who finished 7th in the world in the Rally Super Stock Division during the 77th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.
This year, 15 Ohio senators and 26 representatives recognized champions from their districts.

Every year, children from 7 to 18 years old build gravity-powered cars and compete to qualify for the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby at Derby Downs in Akron. The International Soap Box Derby is the recognized governing body of Soap Box Derby racing that operates the Derby Downs Track where more than 70 annual events take place. For more information, visit
