State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley Township) today participated in a discussion with Pakistani members of a legislative exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Hosted by the International Visitors Council of Columbus, participants in the program met this week with several Senate members and staff to learn about key policy issues and legislative processes in Ohio's state government. The program is intended to impart practical knowledge in regard to democratic governance that participants can take back to their home country.

"We may come from different cultures, but I was inspired by our mutual passion for the democratic process," said Senator LaRose. "Today's discussion focused on our mutual desire to increase political participation so that democracy can flourish."

Seven fellows traveled to the Ohio Statehouse from Pakistan bringing with them significant experience in election administration, democracy building, community activism and legislative affairs.

LaRose has championed fair, transparent, and efficient elections in Ohio, and shared his experience in spearheading election-related legislation during his tenure in the Ohio Senate. LaRose and the program participants discussed the contrasts and similarities between Ohio elections and Pakistani elections and brainstormed methods that will promote transparency and accessibility in elections at all levels.

"This is an issue that brings all sides together and I was delighted not only to share my experience, but to learn a great deal about the election process in Pakistan," said LaRose. "I look forward to fostering this international friendship in the future."
