LaRose discusses election reform with members of a Pakistani delegation visiting the Ohio Senate

COLUMBUS– State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley) recently led a discussion with four Pakistani participants in a legislative exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Hosted by the International Visitors Council of Columbus, participants in the Legislative Fellows Program met this week with various Senate members and staff to learn about key policy issues and legislative processes in Ohio's state government. The program is intended to impart practical knowledge that participants can use to improve democratic governance upon returning to their home country.

The four fellows
– Sami Ullah Abbasi, Muhammed Farooq Afridi, Hassan Nasir Mirbahar and Muhammed Qasim Janjua– brought significant experience in democracy building, community activism, legislative affairs and election administration to bear on their discussion.

"Although we come from different cultures, we found common ground in our mutual passion for making elections accessible and fair," said Senator LaRose. "We share the same desire to see political participation increase so that democracy can flourish."

LaRose, an active state leader in promoting fair, transparent, and efficient elections in Ohio, shared about his experiences in spearheading election-related legislation. The program participants contrasted Ohio elections with elections in Pakistan and shared their mutual hope that policy changes like redistricting reform and the implementation of online voting registration can be enacted in the near future.

"Senator LaRose has great insights about elections not just in the U.S. but also abroad," said Legislative Fellow Hassan Nasir Mirbahar, who serves as Democracy Reporting International's expert on legislative electoral reform issues in Pakistan. "His very candid views about redistricting in Ohio were helpful to understand the process and the political tensions involved."
