enator LaRose (left), accompanied by his colleague Senator Tom Sawyer (D-Akron), addresses members of the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission

State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley) today gave testimony to state officials on the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission in support of Senate Joint Resolution 2, legislation designed to infuse greater balance and transparency into the redistricting process by giving a bipartisan commission the authority to draw congressional district lines.

LaRose sat next to his joint sponsor, Senator Tom Sawyer (D-Akron) as the two offered remarks and answered questions before the committee. The Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission is charged with studying Ohio’s Constitution, promoting discussion of changes, and making recommendations to the Ohio General Assembly for the amendment of the Ohio Constitution. The commission is made up of representatives from both the legislative and executive branches of state government.
"Our goal is to establish a redistricting process that works for Ohioans, not politicians," said LaRose. "I'm proud of the plan we developed last year to achieve a more balanced way of drawing state legislative lines, and I sincerely hope that this approach is approved by Ohio voters. There is no good reason not to extend its provisions to congressional districts as well. The work of redistricting is historically contentious and hyper-partisan, but it does not need to be. This legislation embodies the spirit of civility and compromise that voters want to see in their elected officials."
