State Senators Frank LaRose and Cliff Hite welcome the Taiwanese delegation to Ohio

State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley Township) today welcomed a delegation from Taiwan's Hsinchu County to the Ohio Statehouse to discuss economic development and relationship building between north-western Taiwan county and Ohio.

LaRose discussed recent democratic developments in Taiwan and introduced a resolution to reaffirm support for strengthening and expanding sister-state ties between Ohio and Taiwan. Hsinchu County was selected as one of the top 7 intelligent communities of the world this year, a distinction given to Ohio's capital city in 2015.

"I was honored to welcome this group of diverse professionals to Ohio to continue to strengthen the economic and cultural bond between our state and the people of Hsinchu County and all of Taiwan," said LaRose. "It was enlightening to discuss innovation and trade between our nations, as well as important democratic developments recently taking place in Taiwan."

The region, known as the "Silicon Valley" of Taiwan, is the heart of the nation's high-tech industry. The Hsinchu County Government Global Merchants Exchange Group was led by Magistrate Chiu Ching-Chun and centered around the strong sister-state relationship that Ohio and Taiwan has enjoyed since 1985, including bilateral investments, educational and cultural exchanges and tourism.

LaRose also commended Taiwan's electoral achievements and congratulated Madam Tsai Ing-wen on recently becoming Taiwan's first female president.

The United States ranks as Taiwan's second largest trading partner and Taiwan is the 9th largest trading partner of the United States, with bilateral trade between the two nations reaching $66.6 billion in 2015.
