10.06.16 - Continuing The Fight Against Infant Mortality

 

Last month we took another step forward in this battle with the passage of Senate Bill 332. This legislation reflects the important work of Ohio’s Commission on Infant Mortality, chaired by my Senate colleague Shannon Jones, which was tasked with taking inventory of the state’s response to infant mortality and making recommendations for future steps our state can take. The Commission identified several critical needs: that Ohio improve the collection and sharing of data as it relates to infant deaths, make reforms in how we deliver health care services, and perhaps most importantly, investigate the social determinants of health or why some mothers and babies are more at risk than others.

02.12.16 - Combatting The Opioid Epidemic In Ohio

 

Drug abuse can have long-lasting and damaging effects on the families and communities of opioid users. Opioids—such as prescription pain relievers, heroin, and fentanyl—can be highly addictive and therefore can have a lasting negative impact on the user. There is a direct correlation between drug abuse and criminal activity in the community. According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, approximately 80 percent of Ohio’s current prison inmates have a history of drug and alcohol addiction.

Meningococcal disease is highly contagious, however infants, children, and teens are the most at-risk for infection.  Thankfully, the meningitis vaccine renders the disease preventable. The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ohio Department of Health recommend that parents consult with their child's physician to determine the best vaccine schedule.

The population of veterans in Northeast Ohio continues to grow.  Personal growth and education opportunities for our veterans are a critical initiative of the Ohio legislature.  Earlier this year, members of the General Assembly passed House Bill 488, which was sponsored by Representatives Mike Dovilla (R-Berea) and Al Landis (R-Dover.)  House Bill 488 ensures that the relevant educational and training experience of Ohio’s military personnel and veterans are taken into account when determining equivalency for the issuing of degrees, workforce licenses and certifications.  I co-sponsored this bill to provide accessible and affordable education opportunities for our military families.

04.09.14 - Keeping Drugs Out Of The Hands Of Ohio's Youth

 

In 2011, drug overdoses were the leading cause of accidental deaths in Ohio, with one Ohioan dying from a drug overdose every five hours.  In the past year, prescription and over-the-counter medications account for most of the drug abuse among 12th graders.  Research shows that 1 in 6 teens has used a prescription drug in order to get high or change their mood.  Of those teens who abuse pain killers, about two-thirds say they get them from family members and friends.

Yesterday, the Ohio Statehouse observed the 170th Anniversary of Ohio Governor and U.S. President William McKinley’s birthday with it’s annual Red Carnation Day.

The red carnation was McKinley’s signature flower. Both Senator Scott Oelslager and McKinley are from Stark County.

COLUMBUS– The Senate committee on Insurance and Financial Institutions today passed Senate Bill 99, sponsored by Senator Scott Oelslager (R–North Canton) and Senator Charleta Tavares (R-Columbus), which would enhance the treatment of cancer patients in Ohio by ensuring that patients have affordable, safe and effective access to modern anti-cancer medications.

 
 

11.26.13 - Heinz Expansion Shows Economic Programs Work

 

Stark County received great economic news when H.J Heinz Co. announced a significant investment to expand its Ohio operations, which will bring 250 jobs to its factory in Massillon ("Heinz plans $28 million expansion in Massillon," Nov. 18). These jobs are further proof that Ohio is making an economic comeback.

Education today is what prepares the workforce of tomorrow.  A strong education system in Ohio is necessary to ensure we are leading the pack and preparing our next generation for the economy and workforce demands.  I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the higher education policy initiatives that were put into action with this year’s budget.

Last week, I was proud to co-sponsor Senate Joint Resolution 5, which calls for an amendment to be added to the U.S. Constitution requiring Congress to balance the federal budget. Spending within our means and learning to be responsible with what we have are key principles in order to retain both financial and national security.

 
 

10.30.13 - William "Bill" Willis Pro-Football Hall Of Fame Exhibit At Statehouse

 

Pro-Football Hall of Famer, Bill Willis, is currently being recognized as a “Great Ohioan” in an exhibit at the Ohio Statehouse.  This football hero was signed by Paul Brown in 1946 making history as one of the first African-American pro-football players. Willis was legendary for his speed and agility on the field.

The Pro-Football Hall of Fame is located in Stark County, which is Senate District 29 represented by Sen. Scott Oelslager (R-North Canton).

One of my top priorities as a state lawmaker is to support and improve Ohio’s education policies. This year, more than 40 percent of the state’s budget is dedicated solely to supporting the educational goals and needs for children preschool through high school.

09.09.13 - Investing In Our Infrastructure & Creating Ohio Jobs

 

Earlier in 2013, the legislature approved the state’s biennial transportation budget legislation in March of this year – a $7.6 billion investment in Ohio’s transportation system over the next two years. The Governor signed the budget into law on April 1 and the law’s provisions became effective on July 1.

In the months since the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, parents, lawmakers, school officials and public safety officials across the country have been working together to identify ways to prevent such an event from happening anywhere else. Here in the Ohio Senate, members of the School Safety Task Force held a series of public hearings earlier this year on this issue and are now discussing the various ideas and suggestions that were presented to the panel.

 
 

03.20.13 - Measures That Invest In Infrastructure, Workforce Development Adopted In Senate

 

COLUMBUS — State Senator Scott Oelslager today announced that the Legislature has given final approval to House Bill 51, the $7.6 billion state transportation budget. In addition to funding the Ohio Departments of Transportation and Public Safety, the bill contains a plan to allow $1.5 billion in bonds to be issued on the Ohio Turnpike. These funds will be used towards infrastructure projects in northern Ohio and throughout the state.

COLUMBUS— State Senator Scott Oelslager today announced the Ohio Senate voted to approve legislation that seeks to increase awareness among parents, coaches, referees and others involved in youth sports about the symptoms associated with a concussion. According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), emergency department visits for sports-related traumatic brain injuries – including concussions – increased by 142 percent between 2002 and 2009.

Columbus – State Senator Scott Oelslager announced that language naming memorial highways in Stark County in honor of First Lt. Ashley White-Stumpf and USMC Sgt. Daniel J. House Bill 325 creates numerous memorial highways and bridges throughout the state in recognition of the sacrifices made by Ohioans serving in the armed forces and in law enforcement.
