COLUMBUS -

The Ohio General Assembly today held their Opening Ceremonies for the 131st General Assembly, officially marking the beginning of the new legislative session.

During the ceremonies, State Senator Scott Oelslager (R–North Canton) was sworn in for a new term in the Ohio Senate, representing the 29th District in the state legislature’s upper chamber. Senator Oelslager won his election to the seat in the November 4, 2014 General Election.

"I am honored and humbled. I look forward to serving my constituents and helping to make Ohio an even better place to live, work and raise a family," said Oelslager.

During the 130th General Assembly, Oelslager was named the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, a powerful panel charged with approving the biennial state budget. He has previously served in other leadership posts including Chairman of both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Civil and Commercial Law Committee.

Oelslager brings a wealth of experience to the legislature, acquired over his 30-year legislative career. Prior to serving as an elected official, Oelslager worked as an aide to former Ohio Congressman Ralph Regula and later served as director of public relations for Malone University. He was appointed to the Ohio Senate in 1985, where the people of Stark County subsequently returned him for four additional terms. In 2002, Oelslager was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives before returning to the Senate in 2010.

Oelslager’s oath of office was administered by the Honorable Sharon Kennedy, Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court in the Senate Chamber in the historic Ohio Statehouse.

Each term in the Ohio Senate extends four years. Oelslager’s term will expire at midnight on December 31, 2018.
