Sykes Begins 135th Ohio General Assembly

Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) announced the beginning of his service in the Ohio Senate for the 135th General Assembly.
“I am honored to continue serving Ohioans, especially my constituents in the 28th Ohio Senate District. I am eager to work on the upcoming state budget,” said Senator Sykes. “I will continue to fight for opportunity and resources for Ohio’s small businesses, particularly Ohio’s minority business owners. Additionally, public education remains a priority for me, especially investing in early childhood education to ensure all Ohio children are prepared to learn and succeed.”
Senator Sykes was first elected to the Ohio Senate in 2016 and has an extensive background in public service, formerly serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1983 to 2000 and again from 2007 to 2014. Senator Sykes also previously served on Akron City Council and currently, serves as Parliamentarian for the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus.
Senator Sykes held an in-district swearing-in ceremony in Akron. He was sworn in by Judge David Hamilton of the Akron Municipal Court, who was born and raised in Akron.
Sykes will represent the 28th Senate District, which encompasses parts of Summit, Geauga, and Portage Counties, including Akron.
