Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) hosted the annual Soap Box Derby Champions Day at the Statehouse in Columbus. Winners of the state’s 2019 individual and team races were recognized by both the Senate and the House.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to host the 2019 Soap Box Derby Champions here at the Statehouse,” said Senator Sykes. “It is important that young people practice good sportsmanship and I commend the Soap Box Derby’s commitment to instilling in its participants the values of entrepreneurship, teamwork and volunteerism. I want to thank the Soap Box Derby for their continued contribution to Ohio’s youth.”
The All-American Soap Box Derby dates back to 1934, when the first All-American race was held in Dayton. Today the Soap Box racing tradition continues as youth from around the world will compete in the 82nd annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship which will be held July 20th at the historic track in Akron, Ohio.
The Derby's two youth initiatives, the Gravity Racing Challenge STEM Team Competition and the All-American Soap Box Derby racing program, use Soap Box cars and competitions to provide educational opportunities for K-12 youth.
