COLUMBUS – Today, all Democratic members of the Senate Civil Justice Committee expressed strong opposition to Senate Bill 296, which would add additional hurdles for Ohioans who attempt to keep polling locations open on Election Day. The bill has moved quickly through the Senate and will likely pass the Senate this afternoon.

Columbus—This week, the governor signed Senate Bill 124, designating May as Asthma Awareness Month and May 5th as Childhood Asthma Awareness Day. State Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) is the primary sponsor of the legislation. Asthma is a chronic condition that affects 13-15% of the population. Asthma diagnoses are increasing, and 6.8 million children in the United States suffer from the disease.

Columbus—Today, State Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) introduced Senate Bill 272, a bipartisan bill to give juveniles with extended and life sentences an opportunity for parole hearings. Under the bill, a prisoner who was under the age of eighteen at the time of the offense(s) for which he or she is serving a prison sentence is eligible for parole as follows:

COLUMBUS—Today, State Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) introduced a resolution that would encourage local governments to institute municipal identification card programs. Municipalities across the country, from New York City to San Francisco, have begun to issue these identification cards to their residents. The cards are particularly valuable to community members who may face barriers to obtaining a driver’s license or other state-issued ID, such as the homeless, foster youth, undocumented immigrants, and the elderly.

Columbus—Today, State Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) and the members of the Criminal Justice Recodification Committee detailed their ongoing work at a press conference at the Ohio Statehouse. The 24-member committee is charged with rewriting the criminal laws of the State of Ohio by next August.

COLUMBUS—State Senator Cecil Thomas has introduced legislation to make driving without a front license plate a secondary rather than primary violation.  With this change, law enforcement officers would be unable to stop motorists strictly because their vehicle does not feature two license plates.

Columbus—State Senator Cecil Thomas released a statement after a Hamilton County grand jury indicted University of Cincinnati Police Officer Ray Tensing in the shooting death of Samuel DuBose. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced the indictment this afternoon and released video of the incident.
