Senator Vernon Sykes is currently serving his first term in the Ohio State Senate, representing the 28th district. The 28th district includes: Akron, Barberton, Coventry, Green, Lakemore, Mogadore, Springfield, Tallmadge, and portions of Bath and Cuyahoga Falls.

Senator Sykes has dedicated much of his life to public service. He previously served in Akron City Council and the Ohio House of Representatives. Since 2001, Dr. Sykes has passed along his experience in public service to students as a professor of Political Science and Director of the Columbus Program in State Issues at Kent State University.

08.03.17 - Senator Sykes Hosts Fishing Clinic For Akron Youth

 

AKRON – This week, State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) hosted his annual fishing clinic for children in the community. In collaboration with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), young Ohioans participated in several fishing related activities throughout the day. The children learned about fish native to Ohio’s waters as well as how to cast a fishing rod, catch a fish, and filet and cook fish.

COLUMBUS – Today, Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) expressed deep concerns regarding the budget passed by the Ohio General Assembly. The bill provides a tax cut that favors the wealthy, while cutting funding to state agencies, education, and health care services.  The bill also freezes Medicaid expansion - which will cause thousands of Ohioans to lose health insurance - and cuts funding to some schools including in Senate District 28. 

 
 

06.07.17 - Senator Sykes Announces Several Budget Amendments To Improve Life For Ohioans

 

COLUMBUS – Today, Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) announced that he has offered over 40 individual amendments into Substitute House Bill 49 – Ohio’s 2-year budget bill – on behalf of the families of the 28th Senate District and Ohio. Senator Sykes’ amendments focus on increasing access to early childhood education and critical state and federal resources.
