01.28.16 - New Report: Ohio's Death Penalty Unfair Toward Minorities

 

COLUMBUS– Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D – Columbus) announced her support of a recently released report analyzing the application of Ohio’s death penalty. The report, conducted by University of North Carolina professor Dr. Frank R. Baumgartner, found that the race of the victim is strongly correlated with whether or not an individual receives the death penalty. If a homicide victim is white, there is a greater chance that the death penalty will be sought than if the victim is black. The disparity is even greater when factoring in gender; homicides involving white female victims are six times more likely to result in an execution than homicides involving black male victims.

Columbus - State Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D - Columbus) has been re-appointed as the co-chair of the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission (OCMC). Senator Tavares, along with her colleague Representative Ron Amstutz (R-Wooster), will serve as the co-chair until the committee ends in 2018.

Columbus - State Senator Charleta B. Tavares is speaking out against the use of excessive and deadly force on Linwood Lambert, who was killed in 2013 in South Boston, Virginia, after police tased him repeatedly. Recently, a video of the incident surfaced in which you can see Lambert being tased multiple times by police officers, even though he is in handcuffs. Lambert had a history of mental illness and substance abuse problems. The officers had initially been taking him to the hospital to be evaluated.

Columbus –Today, Assistant Senate Democratic Leader Charleta B. Tavares (D – Columbus) voted against Senate Bill 214, legislation aimed at defunding Planned Parenthood centers throughout Ohio.
