Maharath Condems Committee Passage of Republican Congressional Map
November 16, 2021
Today, state Senator Tina Maharath (D-Canal Winchester), Ranking Member of the Ohio Senate Local Government and Elections Committee, released the following statement after the committee adopted, on a party-line vote, a congressional district map that continue to gerrymander Ohio’s communities:

“The congressional map-drawing process was supposed to be done in an open and transparent manner. Yet, we did not see the map until late last night and we did not receive district-level data that allows up to properly analyze the map until minutes before committee. The public, too, was given little time for input.

“After years of gerrymandering, Ohioans demanded substantial reforms to the way Ohio draws its districts. The map passed out of committee today completely disregards the Ohio Constitution and the will of voters. It gives the Republican party an unearned advantage, is even worse than our current map and it dilutes the influence of Franklin County and of minorities across the state, especially in Hamilton County and Cincinnati. It is for these reasons that I voted no.”
