Al Landis News

COLUMBUS—I am State Senator Al Landis (R-Dover) and I would like to introduce myself to those who live in Ohio’s 31st Senate District, which includes all of Tuscarawas, Wayne, and Muskingum Counties and parts of Stark and Guernsey Counties. As your new state senator, I am humbled by the confidence placed in me to be your voice in the Ohio Senate.

I am a native of Tuscarawas County, born and raised in Dover and a graduate of Dover High School. Following my formal education, I believe I got my real life education during the 33 years I spent working my way up through the ranks at Greer Steel Company.

I am lifelong member of the NRA, a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce, and I serve on Dover Chemical’s CAP team. My wife Debby and I have two adult children and five grandchildren.

I served four terms in the House, beginning in 2011, representing Ohio’s 96th and 98th House Districts. I left in 2018 due to term limits. I was Chair of the Energy & Natural Resources Committee for four years, and served on a number of other key committees, including Agriculture, Economic Development, and Commerce & Labor.

In the Senate, I now serve as the Vice Chair of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee. I also serve on the Community Revitalization, Energy & Public Utilities, and Small Business & Economic Opportunity Committees.

Public service is an honor and a responsibility I do not take lightly. My top priority will be improving of the quality of life for the people living and working in the 31st Senate District and all of Ohio.

My focus in 2023 will be on three key areas – small business and job growth, addiction and mental health matters, and energy policy.

I know firsthand how important small businesses are to the vitality of our community. I will do everything in my power to help them stay here and help them grow. I will constantly look for innovative ways to attract new businesses to our district.

The ability to grow our workforce will depend on improving mental health and reducing addiction. We need vibrant, motivated, and well-educated workers to fill the jobs we are creating. Increasing the quality of life in the 31st Senate District means more than just making good jobs available. It means providing people with the resources to fully enjoy the good life we are building here.

Job growth and energy policy are also related. Ohio is an energy-rich state, and that's one of the reasons we attract new businesses. We need to continue to tap our abundant resources if we are to continue our economic growth.

I strongly feel energy is a national security issue. The more energy-independent America becomes, the less we have to rely on foreign sources. During my House tenure, I saw the consequences of a shrinking coal industry and then the development that came with the shale oil and gas boom. I learned we can’t just scrap one energy source for another – we need a diversified energy program to make sure the lights stay on and our economy grows.

As your new state senator, I value your input and hope to hear from you in the future as my colleagues and I consider legislation.
