Senator Landis Approves Suspending Ohio's Gas Tax for 90 Days

Al Landis News

COLUMBUS—State Senator Al Landis (R-Dover) voted alongside his colleagues to suspend Ohio's gas tax for the next 90 days.

Ohio's Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) currently applies a 38.5 cent tax per gallon of gas and a 47 cent tax per gallon of diesel. By suspending the MFT for 90 days, Ohioans will save $725 million at the pump.

Ohio is taking the necessary steps to bring citizens immediate relief from rising prices, said Senator Landis. By enacting this tax suspension, Ohioans will be able to put the extra money they save towards groceries and bills. I look forward to seeing the positive effect the tax suspension will have across the 31st Senate District.

For accounting purposes, the MFT will be reduced to 1/100th of a cent per gallon which will also protect certain border counties from seeing unintended tax consequences due to neighboring states levying their own tax on fuel sold into Ohio if no other tax is levied.

Local government and highway construction projects receiving MFT dollars will not be negatively affected by the suspension as funds from the current fiscal year's budget surplus will be used to cover the costs during the tax suspension. Additionally, the state's "Rainy Day Fund," otherwise known as the Budget Stabilization Fund, will not be used during the gas tax suspension.
