Hackett Stands with Coalition Seeking Reforms to Ohio's Opiate Prescribing Guidelines

COLUMBUS—On Wednesday, State Senator Bob Hackett (R-London) joined Governor Kasich and a coalition of state leaders to discuss legislative efforts aimed at battling Ohio’s drug epidemic through prescription drug reforms.
Senator Hackett is the sponsor of Senate Bill 119, also known as Daniel's Law. This legislation would make Ohio law consistent with the prescribing guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Additionally, it formally acknowledges that addiction often originates from overprescribing certain medications for the treatment of acute pain.
"Opioids are the driving factor of unintentional drug overdoses within Ohio. The extensive abuse of opioids has led to a statewide public health crisis," said Senator Hackett. "Senate Bill 119 is in response to this horrific epidemic and seeks to prevent further loss of life and the ongoing destruction of our communities."
The state of Ohio licenses 30,000 health professionals to prescribe opioids but there are only 1,000 treatment facilities in Ohio. The vast majority of those treatment facilities do not offer non-addictive treatment options such as naltrexone which has been proven effective in step therapy for long term success in treating opioid addiction.
Senate Bill 119 is currently being considered in the Senate Health, Human Services and Medicaid Committee.
