Senate Passes Hackett Bill Establishing Processes for Abandoned or Derelict Aircraft
COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 206, sponsored by Senator Bob Hackett (R-London), which establishes a process for selling abandoned or derelict aircraft. Senate Bill 206 outlines a procedure for airports to dispose of these aircraft that clutter runways and detract from operations at Ohio public-use airports.
"As the birthplace of aviation, Ohio invests heavily in the air travel industry," said Senator Hackett. "It is important to take care of our aircraft that are no longer in service, so we can keep our air fields safe and operable."
The bill provides extensive time, robust notification procedures, and reasonable criteria to ensure that only aircraft that have truly become abandoned can be disposed of by public-use airports. It also provides the aircraft owner with reasonable and clear procedures and a sufficient amount of time to take proper corrective actions in order to maintain ownership of their aircraft.
Senate Bill 206 passed out of the Senate yesterday and now goes to the House for consideration.
