Ohio Senate Passes Lang Bill Addressing Workforce Challenges
COLUMBUS —The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 198, which provides inmates with resources to rebuild their lives upon release. The legislation is sponsored by State Senator George Lang (R-West Chester) and State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville).
“Ohio is facing a formidable challenge supplying the increasing workforce needs of our state’s businesses," Lang said. "Senate Bill 198 will help address this challenge by ensuring those who desire to re-enter society and become productive citizens will have the necessary documentation for employment upon release."
Senate Bill 198 requires the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) and the Department of Youth Services (DYS) to initiate the application process for state ID cards and other items nine months prior to an individual’s release. The bill also allows the DRC to contract with workforce development re-entry organizations to assist inmates obtaining post-release employment.
Senate Bill 198 now goes to the Ohio House for consideration.
