Today, Senate Assistant Minority Leader Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) announced that the Juneteenth flag has officially been added to the list of flags that are allowed to be flown at the Ohio Statehouse.

“This is a monumental moment to commemorate and pay tribute to the struggles and sacrifices African Americans have endured in the United States,” said Craig. “The flying of this flag at our state capitol will remind Ohioans of the legislature’s continued fight to eradicate systemic racism in Ohio. This is another step forward to secure racial equity and justice for all within our state.”

In 2021, Senator Craig championed the legislation that made Juneteenth a paid state holiday in Ohio. Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in confederate states. Juneteenth is also a celebration of the heritage, culture, and extraordinary achievements of Black Americans in every field of human endeavor.

The flag is set to be flown at the Statehouse on Juneteenth this year.
