Craig Celebrates Juneteenth Flag Raising at Ohio Statehouse

Today, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) hosted a Juneteenth flag raising ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse.
“This historic event marks the first time the Juneteenth flag has been flown at the Ohio Statehouse in our state’s 222-year history,” said Craig. “This monumental moment pays tribute to the struggles and sacrifices that African Americans have endured, along with celebrating the contributions they’ve made to the fabric of our state and nation. As the Juneteenth flag flies above the Statehouse today, we’re reminded that the fight to eradicate systemic racism is far from over, and that Black history is American history.”
Senator Craig was joined by members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, community leaders, and local advocates for racial justice. Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in confederate states. Juneteenth is also a celebration of the heritage, culture, and extraordinary achievements of Black Americans in every field of human endeavor.
This year, Senator Craig successfully advocated for a rule change through the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) to add the Juneteenth flag to the list of flags allowed to fly at the Statehouse, allowing this momentous event to take place. In 2021, Senator Craig championed the legislation that made Juneteenth a paid state holiday in Ohio.
