Craig Celebrates Passage of Stillbirth Prevention Day Bill
Today, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) and state Senator Stephanie Kunze (R-Dublin) applauded the Ohio Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 207, which would designate September 19 as “Stillbirth Prevention Day” in Ohio.
“Stillbirths are a devastating tragedy for families, and women of color are at a higher risk,” said Craig. “That is why it is imperative that we pass this crucial piece of legislation that will lend awareness to all the individuals and families that face the challenge of overcoming a loss of this magnitude.”
According to the Ohio Department of Health, stillbirth is one of the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes, affecting 1 in 60 deliveries in the United States. However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) reported that 1 in 4 stillbirths are preventable. Legislation like S.B. 207 will enhance awareness, increase funding, and promote solutions to prevent stillbirths in Ohio.
“This legislation was brought to me by Dr. Michael Bullock after his daughter experienced the devastating loss of her infant, Miles," said Kunze. "Although this was a time of grief and sorrow for the Bullock family, the family's resilience provided them with a newfound purpose of helping others throughout the difficulties of pregnancy and infant loss. I am grateful that this day will bring awareness to this cause.”
Senate Bill 207 now heads to the Ohio House of Representatives for consideration.
