This week, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) expressed support for the passage of Senate Bill 315, bipartisan legislation to strengthen security protections for Ohio’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by requiring the transition to chip-enabled EBT cards.

“It is imperative that we protect SNAP recipients by beginning to produce and distribute secure chip-enabled EBT cards,” said Craig. “With that being said, I also recognize that there is still work to be done to ensure there are no unintended consequences resulting from the additional language included in this bill by the House to address allegations of Medicaid fraud in Ohio.”

SNAP theft has become an increasing concern across the country as criminals use sophisticated skimming devices and other methods to steal benefits from recipients. Senate Bill 315 aims to combat this growing problem by modernizing Ohio’s EBT card system with enhanced security technology.

Craig also thanked his joint sponsor, state Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster), and members of both chambers for their work on the legislation.

Senate Bill 315 now heads to the governor for his signature.
