Craig Remembers and Honors Legacy of Former State Senator Ben Espy

Today, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) paid tribute to Ben Espy, former Ohio Senate Minority Leader and Columbus City Council member, who passed away on January 4, 2025. 

“Senator Ben Espy was a visionary leader and mentor whose legacy will inspire generations," said Senator Craig. "His unwavering dedication to justice and equality helped shape the course of Ohio's history. He not only opened doors for Black leaders but also worked tirelessly to ensure those doors remained open for future generations. His contributions to the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus and Ohio are immeasurable.”

Senators Espy and Craig have both served on Columbus City Council and in leadership positions of the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus. Senator Espy led a full life of dedicated and committed service and will be remembered as a remarkable statesman, loving father and spouse, and prolific football player for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Senator Espy was an exceptional lawyer, who served our nation valiantly in the United States Air Force as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, stationed at Hancock Field Air Force Base in Syracuse, New York.
