Craig, Senate Democrats Call for End to Yearlong Strike at OPERS-owned Hotel

The Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus recently urged the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) to resolve a yearlong strike at the Cambria Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel, where it is a majority owner.
“The strike at Cambria Hotel in Chicago has lasted far too long. That’s bad for hotel employees and it’s bad for our pension system,” said state Sen. Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus), who sits on the Ohio Retirement Study Council. “Senate Democrats are urging OPERS to do right by Cambria employees and to secure one of our pension fund’s important assets.”
In a letter to OPERS Executive Director Karen Carraher, Senate Democrats called for the fair treatment of hotel employees, who have been striking since September 2018 and remain on the picket line because of demands for housekeepers to increase their workload. The Cambria Hotel is the lone proprietor in a 26-hotel industry strike yet to resolve its dispute with employees.
The caucus also expressed concern that the pension fund is exposed to unnecessary risk due to the prolonged strike.
