Today, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) issued the following statement after members of the Columbus Education Association went on strike after an impasse over negotiations with the Columbus City Schools for safer working and learning conditions:

“I am deeply concerned for the wellbeing of students and striking teachers. Strikes are never easy, and our teachers are making tremendous sacrifices, as are our parents and students. It is my hope that Columbus City Schools stays at the table and continues meaningful discussions with CEA until there is a contract resolution.

“Furthermore, I am extremely troubled to hear that health insurance for striking teachers has been canceled. I find it unconscionable to endanger the lives of teachers and their families, and I call on the Columbus City Schools to reinstate their health insurance immediately. I intend to introduce legislation similar to legislation proposed at the federal level that would prevent health insurance cancellation from happening to striking workers.”
