Today, state Sen. Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) announced the passage of his legislation to designate Columbus’ Poindexter Village as a historic site, Senate Bill 192.
“Poindexter Village is a prominent part of Columbus’ vibrant history,” said Craig. “By designating this neighborhood as a historical site, we are preserving the extraordinary leadership and dedication of James Preston Poindexter, the influence of FDR’s New Deal in our community and – most importantly – the memories and the people that Poindexter Village produced.”
Poindexter Village, named after Columbus’ first African-American councilmember James Preston Poindexter, was the second community housing development in the US. It was also part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, which included 700 community housing developments across the country. The buildings designated under SB 192 are located at 290 North Champion Avenue.
