COLUMBUS—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz this week announced that ODNR is providing nearly $520,000 in grants to two trails projects within the 27th Senate District.
State Senator Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) welcomed the announcement, “I am delighted that two of the twenty trails awarded are in the 27th Senate district. These trails will provide immediate connectivity between communities as well as our national park.”
“By providing these grants, we can help communities across the state provide Ohioans with more options for recreation,” added Governor DeWine.
The first project will use awarded funding to acquire a 1.5-acre parcel near Cannon Road in Twinsburg. This parcel, first identified as a key connector in the City of Twinsburg’s 2014 Comprehensive Plan, provides a trail connection between Center Valley Park and other parks located within the Tinker's Creek corridor.
The second of two projects, the Heights to Hudson Trail, will be an asphalt trail approximately 10 feet wide and 2 miles long. The trail will connect the Summit Metro Parks Bike and Hike Trail through the Village of Boston Height's downtown commercial center, to the City of Hudson’s border. This alignment establishes a trail through the Village and implements a direct connection into the regional trail network.
“I applaud our local leaders for pursuing this vision and have no doubt that these trails will be enjoyed by many people across the region who want to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors," Roegner said.
The grants were part of a larger pool of 20 projects across the state, which were awarded a total of $6.64 million though the “Clean Ohio Trails Fund." This fund works to improve outdoor recreational opportunities, and has offered 14 rounds of funding since Ohioans approved the $400 million bond program in 2000.
