COLUMBUS—Senator Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) joined her colleagues in passing Substitute House Bill 33, the Senate’s budget proposal for Ohio's FY 2024-2025 biennium.

“This is a budget I am proud to support. As is constitutionally required, it is balanced and recognizes that the money we have belongs to the people of Ohio and not big government," said Roegner. "As such this Senate budget provides historic tax relief of $1.3 billion through personal income tax and commercial activity tax reductions, resulting in $1 billion in an extended sales tax holiday. With these tax reductions and many other positive conservative reforms, Ohioans have a lot to celebrate.”

Senator Roegner successfully advocated for several provisions in the Senate-passed version of the budget to accomplish these goals, including:

  • An across-the-board tax cut for Ohio taxpayers and the consolidation of brackets
  • An expanded August sales tax holiday which allows Ohioans to avoid tax on the purchase of most items under $500; with funds allocated to reimburse local government entities for lost income
  • A provision removing the tax commissioner’s discretion to set property tax values, putting guardrails around skyrocketing property tax assessments within Summit County
  • Universal school choice so that parents can decide where to educate their child, while also providing more state aid to public schools than any other time in state history
  • A one-time investment of $125 million dollars for rail safety and grade separation projects

The bill now returns to the Ohio House of Representatives, where it is expected to be referred to a conference committee where the House and Senate versions will be reconciled. It must be balanced and signed into law by June 30th.
