COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed House Bill 81, which honors fallen military members, first responders, and elected officials. Included in this legislation is Senate Bill 152, sponsored by State Senator Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson).

Senate Bill 152 designates a portion of State Route 8 through Cuyahoga Falls as the “Cpl. Jack O. McClure Memorial Highway." Corporal McClure was born and raised in Cuyahoga Falls and was drafted into the United States Army upon graduation in 1942.

On June 6th, 1944, McClure found himself a part of the 76th Infantry Division, 304th Regiment, “D Company,” storming Normandy as part of the first wave. After surviving D-Day, McClure and his unit completed various military assault missions, fighting their way through hedgerows toward Luxembourg. From there, he also fought in the “Battle of the Bulge,” the siege of Bastogne, and numerous other unnamed conflicts.

"Cpl. McClure is among the finest of Ohioans," said Roegner. “It was truly an honor to meet him several years ago. Watching him cut the grass humbly in his own yard while in his 90s, one would never guess that there on the mower sat a true hero, who fought bravely for our country during World War II. When reflecting upon the life and service of Cpl. McClure, it is clear why he is part of the ‘greatest generation.’”

Cpl. McClure received the following honors:

  • Good Conduct Medal
  • Meritorious Unit Badge
  • American Campaign Medal
  • European and African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
  • Bronze Star Medal
