Koehler Introduces Legislation to Improve Ohio's 340B Program

COLUMBUS— State Senator Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield) recently introduced Senate Bill 198, which ensures Community Health Centers are able to continue purchasing medications at a discounted price through the 340B Drug Pricing Program. SB 198 would prohibit drug manufacturers from placing restrictions on shipments of 340B drugs to safety net providers and their pharmacy partners.
“This bill is about protecting the lifeline that allows Community Health Centers, such as Rocking Horse in Clark County and Five Rivers in Greene County, the ability to provide essential care in every corner of Ohio,” said Senator Koehler. “The 340B program ensures that working families, seniors, and under served populations can access medications they otherwise couldn't afford—and we must protect that.”
The federal 340B Drug Pricing Program has enabled safety net providers—otherwise known as covered entities—to purchase medications at reduced costs. The providers, which include Community Health Centers, reinvest savings to increase access to care and provide medications to patients who might otherwise go without.
Senate Bill 198 has been assigned to the Senate Health Committee for further consideration.
