Koehler Joins Senate in Overriding Governor's Budget Veto
COLUMBUS—State Senator Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield) voted in favor of overriding Governor Mike Dewine's operating budget veto to eliminate certain levy types proposed by local governments.
“This provision stops schools from capitalizing on the inflationary value of your homes—which is a major factor in why taxes are rising," said Senator Koehler. "With the override of this veto, schools will continue to collect property taxes on existing levies that have already passed or will pass on November 5th. Emergency and substitute levies allow schools to collect money well above their guaranteed 20 mil floor as passed in 1972.”
Under the language now restored in the bill, Ohio eliminates the ability of local governments to propose replacement and substitute emergency levies. Any replacement or emergency levy that is currently active will continue until its expiration.
The Senate voted in a 21-11 majority to override the Governor's veto of language originally included in House Bill 96, the state operating budget.
