Hicks-Hudson Applauds Proponent Testimony on Senate Bill 120
Today, state Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) welcomed farmers, educators, and advocates to the Senate Finance Committee as they gave proponent testimony on her Senate Bill 120, which establishes the Urban Farmer Youth Initiative Pilot Program.
"Urban agriculture is more important than ever. As cities continue to grow, we must prioritize sustainable food systems that can thrive in urban environments," said Hicks-Hudson. "Urban agriculture not only provides fresh produce to local communities but also creates green spaces, promotes environmental sustainability, and offers economic opportunities for underserved populations. It’s essential that we continue to invest in this sector to ensure healthy, resilient communities and a sustainable future.
This bill is a continuation of Senate Bill 111, which was included in the 135th General Assembly’s Operating Budget. Those who came to support the legislation include farmers from the original pilot programs funding, Central State University administrators, the Ohio Farm Bureau, the Ohio Association of Food Banks, and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
Senate Bill 120 awaits further hearings in the Senate Finance Committee.
