Today, state Senators Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) and Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus) gave sponsor testimony on Senate Bill 236. The legislation would establish safety measures to help reduce suicides and support individuals struggling with mental health challenges and suicidal ideation.

“This legislation is crucial at a time when the leading cause of gun deaths for most demographics is suicide, and when 6 out of 10 gun deaths in 2023 were the result of suicide,” said Hicks-Hudson. “For at least the past decade, the United States has led developed nations in overall gun deaths. One way we can reduce these numbers is by creating safety measures for individuals at higher risk of self-inflicted gun injury.”

This legislation will not impede any Ohioans’ right to bear arms, but instead will help individuals who recognize that they may be a danger to themselves or others by providing temporary protections against one of the most final and lethal acts of violence.

Senate Bill 236 awaits further hearings in the Senate Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.
