Kunze Commends Senate Passage of Scout's Honor Bill
COLUMBUS—State Senator Stephanie Kunze (R-Dublin) commends the Senate passage of House Bill 35, known as the Scout's Honor Law. The legislation allows Ohio-based claimants against the bankruptcy estate of the Boy Scouts of America to recover their full financial entitlements.
"Nearly 2,000 Ohioans were victims of abuse by people affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America," Senator Kunze said. "While no amount of money can take away the personal trauma of these individuals, House Bill 35 creates an opportunity for claimants to receive the full amount they are eligible for under the settlement fund."
The Boy Scouts of America settlement allows claimants who live in states with longer statutes of limitation to receive more money than states with shorter statutes of limitations. House Bill 35 eliminates Ohio's statute of limitations for actions brought specifically by victims of childhood sexual abuse in this settlement case. As a result, Ohio's claimants will be able to receive 100% of their monetary entitlements opposed to only 30-45%.
House Bill 35 now goes to the Ohio House for a concurrence vote.
