COLUMBUS—State Senator Stephanie Kunze (R-Hilliard) today joined Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, First Lady Fran DeWine, former Speaker of the House Jo Ann Davidson, Senate President Larry Obhof (R-Medina) and State Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) to sign a bill honoring the upcoming 100th anniversary of the women's suffrage movement.

Senate Bill 30 creates the Women's Suffrage Centennial Commission to raise awareness about the historical significance of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. The bipartisan commission will operate under the direction of the Ohio Secretary of State and will plan and carry out events and activities from June 2019-August 2020 honoring the women's suffrage movement and educating the public about its important place in history.

"It took bold reformers to fight against the status quo that only men were granted the God-given right to vote in America," said Kunze, who sponsored the bill. "I want my daughters and women from all walks of life to learn this kind of bravery and to get involved and let their voices be heard. I am excited about the events to celebrate the historical impact of the 19th Amendment has had, and will continue to have, in our great state. The best is yet to come!"

"This centennial gives Ohioans an opportunity to celebrate one of the great milestones in American history," added Obhof, who co-sponsored the bill. "We should use this opportunity to educate our children about our history and about the importance of their constitutional rights. We believe the Centennial Commission will encourage more Ohioans to exercise their right to vote and will help inspire more young women to seek roles in public service."
