COLUMBUS—The Senate today unanimously passed Senate Bill 173, sponsored by State Senator Stephanie Kunze (R-Hilliard), designating the month of September as "Hirschsprung's Disease Awareness Month."

Hirschsprung's disease is a disorder that causes blockage in the intestines of newborn babies. If identified quickly, the condition can often be corrected surgically.

The disorder occurs in approximately one in 5,000 live births and is usually apparent shortly after birth, but can also be present in older children and adults.

"What this legislation seeks to do is increase public awareness of Hirschsprung's disease and encourage caregivers of newborns to seek an early diagnosis and proper treatment of the disease," said Kunze.

Senate Bill 173 will now be sent to the Ohio House fo further consideration.
