Senate Passes Johnson Bill Allowing Humvees For Personal Use
COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 280, introduced by State Senator Terry Johnson (R-McDermott), which would allow high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles, also known as Humvees, to be used for general transportation.
"Since its introduction in 1985, the Humvee has seen widespread use with the United States military. It symbolizes innovation, resilience, and adaptability," said Senator Johnson. "By allowing the general use of Humvees, I hope to inspire Ohio's citizens to participate in local patriotic parades by honoring our military and its traditions."
Currently, Humvees retired from military service and purchased by a private citizen are restricted to off-road use only. SB 280 creates a process in which Ohioans will be able to register their Humvee for general transportation purposes by simply passing an Ohio State Highway Patrol safety inspection. The legislation also allows a Humvee to be registered as a historic motor vehicle, granting their use in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and to and from a mechanic's shop.
"I want to see more of these renowned vehicles appear alongside Willys Jeeps and 2 and ½ Ton Trucks," added Senator Johnson. "By passing Senate Bill 280, our residents and veterans can proudly commemorate all eras of our military in our community events and celebrations."
SB 280 now heads to the Ohio House for further consideration.
