COLUMBUS—State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Huron) today introduced legislation to require a photo ID to vote in Ohio’s elections.

Senate Bill 320 is the latest piece of legislation Senator Gavarone has sponsored to improve election integrity and security in Ohio. She previously introduced Senate Bill 52 in 2019, which was signed into law, that required audits for local, state and federal elections in Ohio.

“One of my priorities in the legislature has always been to improve election integrity and voter confidence in Ohio,” Gavarone said. “I want to ensure we have the most accurate and trusted elections in the country, and requiring a photo ID to vote is a simple measure we can take to achieve that goal.”

Under Senate Bill 320, Ohioans would be required to show a photo ID when voting in-person. Voters who choose to vote by mail would be required to provide both of the following:
  1. Driver’s License/State ID number, or a photocopy of their Driver’s License/State ID
  2. The last four digits of their social security number
The bill also provides every Ohio citizen 17 years or older the opportunity to receive a free state ID.

Polling has consistently proven that Americans overwhelmingly support requiring voters to show a photo ID in order to vote.

A Monmouth University poll, conducted in 2021, showed that 80% support requiring a photo ID.

Senate Bill 320 will be referred to a committee for further consideration.
