COLUMBUS—State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) introduced Senate Bill 167, which will name a portion of State Route 60 in Erie County in honor of local war hero Marine Corporal Tim W. Russell.

“Corporal Russell displayed courage in the face of danger, saving numerous Americans on the front lines in Vietnam,” Gavarone said. “His decisive actions, determination, and bravery make him a man to model in our community and state.”

"Corporal Russell has dedicated his life to keeping our country and communities safe," said Manning. "His heroic actions in Vietnam and service as a law enforcement officer here at home have solidified his legacy as one of our nation's finest citizens."

Marine Corporal Russell, a Vermilion resident, served as a squad leader in the Vietnam War. When his headquarters were attacked by the Vietcong, Russell was knocked unconscious and woke to discover he was critically wounded and bleeding intensely from his limbs. Russell refused medical attention and instead directed his men’s fire towards the enemy. The Vietcong were forced to retreat, which saved their headquarters and their line.

Russell was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart for his heroism. In 2016, he was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame.
