COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 60, legislation sponsored by State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) that will create a new occupation to address the mental health crisis in Ohio.

Senate Bill 60 will establish a new licensed healthcare professional called a Certified Mental Health Assistant (CMHA). These new professionals will directly address workforce needs in the mental health care field. CMHAs will have specific education and clinical requirements, and they will practice under the supervision of physicians to support patients.

"This first-of-its-kind profession will give more Ohioans access to exceptional care and services while giving a new generation the tools they need to enter a field with high demand," Gavarone said. "Senate Bill 60 will directly alleviate burdens on our mental health system for generations to come."

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, only 1,060 psychiatrists will be left in Ohio by 2030, 52% of the number Ohio needs. Millions of Ohioans in 43 counties currently live in mental health professional shortage areas

Senate Bill 60 now goes to the Ohio House for consideration.
