COLUMBUS – Senate President Larry Obhof (R-Medina) and State Senators Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and Dave Burke (R-Marysville) today welcomed President Trump to Clyde, Ohio at a Whirlpool Corporation manufacturing plant where the President spoke about his administration’s efforts to protect American manufacturing jobs and help businesses safely continue operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While at Whirlpool, the President planned to sign an executive order requiring the federal government to purchase “essential” medicines and medical supplies from U.S. manufacturers. The order aims to remove unnecessary regulatory barriers to domestic pharmaceutical production, keep drug prices low, and ensure Americans have access to essential medicines and protection measures during the pandemic.
The historic United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) also became official last month, removing barriers for small businesses, protecting American workers and jobs, and encouraging more good and materials to be manufactured in the United States. In 2018, the Trump administration provided relief to U.S. manufacturers from surging imports of washing machines and solar products. These actions led Whirlpool to add an additional 200 jobs in Ohio.
“President Trump’s work to revitalize American manufacturing means real jobs and growth for our communities and families,” said Obhof. “He knows how important these trade reforms are to our state, and I appreciate him listening to our concerns and standing up for Ohioans.”
“Jobs provide lifelines to our families and communities, and the Ohio jobs the President has protected with his trade reforms are more critical than ever as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Gavarone. “It’s an honor to join him today and work together to drive job creation and investment in Ohio businesses.”
“The Trump Administration has gone to great lengths to help strengthen and grow Ohio’s economy. By enacting policies like the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, President Trump has leveled the playing field for Ohio’s workforce and set the foundation for a stronger market,” Burke added. “I’m proud to welcome President Trump to Clyde and thank him for putting the American worker first.”
Whirlpool employs over 3,000 people in Clyde and approximately 10,000 total in Ohio. Its facility in Clyde is the largest washer manufacturing plant in the world. To watch the President’s remarks from today's event, click here.
According to the Department of Labor, USMCA will create as many as 500,000 or more jobs for workers at a time when many Americans have been forced out of work due to COVID-19.
