COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 182, sponsored by State Senator Tom Patton (R-Strongsville), to name a portion of Lorain Avenue in Cleveland as John E. Gallagher Way.

"John Gallagher was a hero and a dedicated philanthropist," said Senator Patton. "He helped raise billions of dollars for charities across the globe and was dedicated to improving the education of future generations."

After graduating from Cathedral Latin High School, Gallagher enlisted in the United States Army during the Second World War, receiving several medals for his honorable service.

Gallagher would later found Arrow International, a manufacturer of charitable and gaming solutions. He would use his earnings to help build and fund Urban Community School, which currently serves 750 students from across western Cleveland.

"Urban Community School has revived the entire community, and it could not have done this without the constant support of John Gallagher and his wife of 70 years, Catherine," said Senator Patton. "This renamed portion of Lorain Avenue directly in front of the Urban Community School would be a small, but fitting, tribute to John Gallagher.

Senate Bill 182 now goes to the Ohio House for further consideration.
