Senator Sykes Statement On The National School Walkout To End Gun Violence

Today, state Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) released the following statement regarding the National School Walkout marking the one month anniversary of the Parkland, Florida school shooting that left 17 people dead.
“Today marks the one month anniversary of the horrific school shooting that happened in Parkland, Florida,” said Senator Sykes. “It is clear these student organizers and protesters have every intention of holding elected officials accountable for their action, or inaction, on limiting gun violence. I commend these young people for staying engaged with this issue and working tirelessly to affect positive change in their communities and the nation as a whole.”
Senator Sykes has come out in support of multiple pieces of legislation to curb gun violence, including bills to increase school safety, reduce the number of firearms in circulation, ban bump stocks and strengthen the reporting of suspicious behavior, sometimes referred to as “red flag” bills.
The National School Walkout is part of a broader slate of national protests aiming to keep pressure on lawmakers to increase regulations regarding the purchasing and use of firearms. A national “March for Our Lives” protest has been scheduled for March 24 in Washington, D.C. with sister marches planned across the country.
